Alright, the reason I'm putting this up (and the reason I should have put this up in the first place) is because I understand I've made some questionable decisions, and I want to answer them here rather than finding you in whatever roleplay you're in and answering your question by quote (Sorry, DemonDante!) Also, since I'm new and haven't made my 10 posts yet, I cannot answer PM's; the main reason I'm putting this up. So, ask me anything and sorry for recent inconveniences.

Preventing 'C'yber Pearl Harbor'

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Cyber attacks that have long caused major work disruption and theft of private information are becoming more sophisticated with prolonged attacks perpetrated by organized groups. In September 2012, Bank of America, Citibank, the New York Stock Exchange, and other financial institutions were targets of attacks for more than five weeks. Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta warned that the United States was facing the possibility of a "cyber-Pearl Harbor" and was increasingly vulnerable to foreign computer hackers who could disrupt the government, utility, transportation, and financial networks.

Key to protecting online operations is a high degree of "cyber security awareness," according to human factors/ergonomics researchers Varun Dutt, Young-Suk Ahn, and Cleotilde Gonzalez. In their Human Factors article, "Cyber Situation Awareness: Modeling Detection of Cyber Attacks With Instance-Based Learning Theory," they developed a computer model that presented 500 simulated cyber attack scenarios to gauge simulated network security analysts' ability to detect attacks characterized as either "impatient" (the threat occurs early in the attack) or "patient" (the threat comes later in the attack and is not detected promptly). Their model was able to predict the detection rates of security analysts by varying the analysts' degree of experience and risk tolerance as well as an attacker's strategy (impatient or patient attack).

The authors found that experienced, risk-averse analysts were less accurate at detecting threats in patient than in impatient attacks. "In a patient attack, when the attacker waits until the end to generate threats, the experiences in the analyst's memory that indicate an attack" are not as readily retrieved, says Dutt, which "makes it difficult to correctly detect patient attacks."

"Application of our results include the design of training tools that increase competency and the development of decision-support tools that improve defenders' on-the-job performance in detecting cyber attacks." The authors suggest that employers evaluate an analysts' risk tolerance before employment and/or manipulate tolerance levels during training to better identify threats.

As cyber warfare strategies and tactics evolve, the authors plan to further investigate the trend of drawn-out attacks and new intrusion detection software.

Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB)

The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) ($179.99 list) is a desktop drive that has enough space to back up all currently shipping MacBook laptops and Mac desktops. It can also be used as a repository for your digital life, including photos, videos, and music. While it's not the fastest drive out there, it has enough speed to make sure you're not waiting on it to copy groups of files back and forth from the primary drive in your Mac. It's a good choice for the digital pack rat who needs a place to put all his digital photos and video downloads.

Design and Features
The Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) looks very similar to the former Editors' Choice Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB) ($250 list, 4 stars) that we reviewed earlier, with the same black plastic construction. This time, however, the Mac version has a matte silver stripe instead of a black one. The GoFlex and Backup Plus desktop lines share the same USM (Universal Storage Module) connectors between the base and the drive chassis. The USM connector allows you to physically lock the drive away at night while keeping the power and USB connectors connected to your Mac. Alternately, you can purchase a desktop Thunderbolt adapter ($189) so you can use the drive with the faster and more flexible Thunderbolt interface on current Macs. Aside from the USB and power ports on the back, there is a row of LEDs on the front of the base that let you know how full the drive is (provided you have the Seagate Dashboard software installed).

The drive we reviewed has a 3TB capacity, and there is a 2TB version currently available ($129.99). Theoretically, the base should be able to support a 4TB model as well, though that model isn't yet available. We suppose you could put the GoFlex Desk's 4TB drive on the Backup Plus' base and use it that way. The drive measures 7 by 1.75 by 4.75 inches (HWD) with the base installed. Since the drive requires an AC adapter to power up, this is strictly a deskbound drive. It's portable in that it's easy to pick up, but you won't be able to use it away from a power outlet, as you would a true bus-powered portable drive. The 3TB is plenty to back up or store the files from most desktops and laptops, good enough to hold over 100 high-definition movies and hundreds of standard-definition ones. The drive comes pre-formatted with Mac OS X's HFS+ format, so it will work with Time Machine out of the box.

The Backup Plus Desktop also comes with Seagate's Dashboard software, which activates the capacity gauge on the front of the drive's base. Four LEDs show how full the drive is while it's on. Seagate Dashboard also can be used to upload photos and videos to social media services like Facebook and Flickr, plus Dashboard can also be set to automatically or manually download pictures from your profile(s) on Facebook and Flickr for local safekeeping. Essentially it helps you manage your digital life online and locally on your Mac. Our current Editors' Choice desktop drive, the ioSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars), relies on brute force and a bulletproof chassis to keep your data safe. The Seagate leverages online storage, helping you share and keep your photos safe online via social networking. The Backup Plus Desktop comes with a two-year warranty, better than the one-year warranty found on more generic hard drives.

Performance
This is a fairly speedy drive. It takes a scant eight seconds to copy our standard 1.2GB test folder via USB 3.0. This is much faster than the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) ($369.99 list, 3.5 stars) (42 sec USB 2.0, 30 sec FireWire800), which also uses a single 3TB drive mechanism. That said, performance drives like the LaCie Little Big Disk 1TB SSD (Thunderbolt) ($999 list, 4.5 stars) are faster at six seconds. Likewise on the AJA System test (a test of data throughput optimized for video), the Seagate Backup Plus puts in a strong 167 MBps write throughput and a 171 MBps read throughput, way outclassing the Iomega Mac Companion by a factor of four or five. Of course, the SSD-powered LaCie Little Big Disk leaves them all in the dust. Essentially, the Seagate Backup Plus is a good Time Machine drive for quick file backups, but there are better-specialized drives for video editors and scientific users.

The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop is a very good Mac drive for the user that needs to clear a lot of space off their primary hard drives, or needs a Time Machine drive to back up the 1-3TB hard drive in their desktop Mac. You can of course use it with a MacBook laptop, but you'll have to leave the drive in your office or at home, since it's not portable. The current Editors' Choice ioSafe Solo G3 holds on to its desktop-class drive crown thanks to its data protections, both physical and pre-paid data recovery after an incident. The Solo G3 can also be bolted down to a metal or wood surface, which adds to its security. But if you simply need a repository for the files from your Mac, the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive is a very good choice.

Bosses Look For Friends When Hiring

Interviewing for a new job? You might want to be extra friendly. New research finds that it's not the best worker employers want to hire, but a friend to hang out with.

As a result of this approach, employers don?t necessarily hire the most skilled candidates, said Lauren Rivera, the study's author and an assistant professor of management and organizations and sociology at Northwestern University.

"Of course, employers are looking for people who have the baseline skills to effectively do the job," Rivera said. "But, beyond that, employers really want people who they will bond with, who they will feel good around, who will be their friend and maybe even their romantic partner."

The study is based on 120 interviews with professionals involved in undergraduate and graduate hiring at elite U.S. investment banks, law firms and management consulting firms. Rivera found that evaluators often valued their personal feelings of comfort, validation and excitement over identifying job candidates with superior cognitive or technical skills.

More than half of the evaluators in the study ranked cultural fit ? the perceived similarity to a firm's existing employee base in leisure pursuits, background ?and self-presentation ? as the most important part of the job interview process.

Rivera did caution, however, that the results don't mean employers are hiring unqualified people.

"My findings demonstrate that ? in many respects ? employers hire in a manner more closely resembling the choice of friends or romantic partners than how one might expect employers to select new workers," she said.

The study also found that the cultural similarities valued at elite professional service firms have critical socioeconomic dimensions.

"Evaluators are predominately white, Ivy League-educated, upper-middle or upper-class men and women who tend to have more stereotypically masculine leisure pursuits and favor extracurricular activities associated with people of their background," Rivera said. "The types of cultural similarities valued in elite firms' ?hiring processes have the potential to create inequalities in access to elite jobs based on parental socioeconomic status."

Rivera believes that while the research only examined elite professional service firms, the results do have implications for occupations across all industries.

"I think that the process is generalizable, but I think the degree to which cultural similarity matters in the decision to hire varies across occupations depending on their technical demands, their degree of social demands, and how structured interviews are," Rivera said. "So, for example, if you were hiring a neurosurgeon, I think there would be more of an emphasis on performance than cultural fit."

In addition, the types of cultural similarities employers value may not be the same for all occupations.

"Cultivating leisure time is a hallmark of the upper middle and upper classes, and it's really important as a class marker and as a source of identity," Rivera said. "You may see different types of cultural similarities that matter in occupations that are less elite."

The study, "Hiring as Cultural Matching: The Case of Elite Professional Service Firms," appears in the December issue of the American Sociological Review.

German Parliament approves Greek debt deal

(AP) ? German lawmakers overwhelmingly backed a deal aimed at trimming Greece's debt load and keeping the country financially afloat but the country's finance minister insisted it would be irresponsible to raise hopes of more radical debt forgiveness soon.

Parliament voted 473-100 Friday to back the complex deal reached by European finance ministers on Tuesday after a marathon of negotiations. There were 11 abstentions.

The agreement paves the way for Greece to receive ?44 billion ($57 billion) in critical rescue loans, without which the country would face bankruptcy and a possible exit from the euro.

It also contains measures including a debt buyback program and an interest rate cut on loans. Those are aimed at cutting back Greece's debts and giving it more time to push through economic reforms and trim its budget deficit.

However, it stops short of forgiving outright debt owed to lead creditor Germany and other eurozone governments. Chancellor Angela Merkel's government has strongly opposed a so-called "haircut" in the run-up to elections next year.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told lawmakers that the latest deal will keep the pressure on Greece to fulfill its promises and that blocking loan payouts would have all round Europe.

"We have always pushed the principle of conditionality, and that goes here too," Schaeuble said. "Greece will only receive all this relief if it continues to implement its reform measures, one after another."

Germany's Parliament has to approve eurozone rescue measures. The bailouts of Greece and others haven't been popular in Germany, Europe's biggest economy, and there has been growing unease in Merkel's center-right coalition.

Still, broad support was assured because two of Germany's three opposition parties voted largely in favor. They argued that Greece had to be kept afloat despite reservations about Merkel's insistence on a step-by-step and austerity-heavy approach to the debt crisis.

Many economists say that Greece's debt burden ? forecast to reach some 190 percent of its gross domestic product next year ? can only be managed by writing off loans by governments. Germany's opposition parties also argue that the move will be inevitable sooner or later.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a leading member of the main opposition Social Democrats said the deal on the table "is not a sustainable solution for Greece" and argued that the government had merely "bought time" ? above all to avoid addressing "unpleasant truths."

"You know that ... everything points toward a haircut in the end, but you are avoiding this truth like the plague," Steinmeier told Schaeuble. However, he said his party would back the deal because "we cannot leave the Greeks in the lurch."

The government argues that full-scale debt relief is legally impossible at present and would send the wrong message.

"If you say debt will be forgiven, then people's readiness to save in order to get further aid is weakened," Schaeuble said. "If we want to help Greece along this difficult road, we must advance step by step, and the wrong speculation at the wrong time doesn't solve the problem."

Some lawmakers in Merkel's coalition argue that the government's current approach already goes too far.

Klaus-Peter Willsch, a backbencher with Merkel's Christian Democrats who has become a prominent critic of her rescue policies, told lawmakers that "the question of whether a country leaves a currency union does not automatically lead to armageddon."

"We know from our private lives that you don't throw good money after bad," he said. "Let's end this road today."

Don't Let Your Real Estate Listing Hibernate: Winter Home Sellers ...

Winter house for sale - real estateA long-standing practice of real estate professionals is?to take a home?off the market in the winter to ?refresh? the listing for the new year, and then re-list the home?in the spring.? Most will tell a homeowner who is thinking of putting their home on the market in winter to wait until the spring, since more homes sell at that time of year.

Much like MLS listing books, newspaper ads, and ?pocket listings?, this practice has seen its better days and has been replaced by serious real estate professionals with more updated marketing practices. The fact is, if you want to sell your home, it should absolutely be on the market during the winter.

It?s not a hassle for a home seller

Sellers think they will be put out by showings during the holidays if their home is on the market, but they can simply tell their agent to put them on a ?winter showing schedule?. ?The agent can field all calls for showings, pre-approve buyers, and arrange showings for them around the seller?s schedule. ?The seller can designate certain times and days that the house will not be available. ?The seller will be virtually undisturbed unless a very serious buyer wants to see the home and the agent has personally scheduled it.

Homes on the market in winter, on average, are more likely to sell, sell more quickly, and sell at less of a discount.? There are a number of reasons for this:

Changing dynamics in home buyer searches

Real estate professionals used to discourage home sellers from winter listings because of the lack of potential buyers, mostly due to logistical issues.? People go on vacation, there are less daylight hours to view homes, and bad weather inhibits buyers from taking extensive tours of homes for sale.

Today, this is a very minor issue.? Nine out of ten?home buyers search for their home online, according to the National Association of Realtors.? They?re searching at night after dark.? They?re browsing real estate websites while out of town,?at Grandma?s after a long Thanksgiving dinner.? They?re driving around their desired neighborhood, viewing available homes on a mobile phone, in the safety of their warm vehicle.

The way buyers search for homes has changed, and their location, the time of year, and the weather have far less effect on their ability to view homes than it used to.

Changes in home buyers? mobility (particularly in Greater Seattle)

Maybe even more significantly, the home buying population today has become far more mobile.? Americans move to new cities and states at a far greater rate than in generations past.? These homes buyers move mainly for professional reasons, at all times of the year.

With the continuing influx of software, biotech, and generally high-skilled workers moving to the Seattle area year-round, there is constantly a new source of potential home buyers entering our market.? They?re searching homes online from their hometowns.? When they arrive, they?re searching for a home from the current inventory available.? They will choose from the homes that are listed at the time they move?those that are not listed will miss consideration.

We?ve seen evidence of this firsthand, having sold some of the top homes in Washington state during the winter months.? Clients have literall said ?I?m flying out for a week, show me the best homes available and we?ll write an offer before we leave.?

The percentage of homes sold in winter compared to total sales has risen significantly over time.? Home buyers? changing employment and mobility situations have lessened the seasonal effect that we?re used to quoting in real estate circles.? There are certainly still less sales in winter, but that brings us to our?final point.

Competition is lighter in winter

This is one of the most significant factors that?I don?t believe most home sellers analyze. It?s true that if your home isn?t on the market in winter, the new Microsoft?manager relocating from CA?won?t see it and will thus buy another home.? But that same situation for a home seller who is on the market is magnified.? Your competition is nowhere to be seen.? While the buyer may have had 30 homes to choose from in June, there may only be 10 homes that fit their criteria in January. If they are motivated to buy, they will choose one of those 10 homes.

Sellers who stick out the market through the winter actually increase their chance to sell significantly.? When the smaller number of winter sales are compared to the smaller inventory of available homes, you?ll see that an individual home seller may actually be just as likely to have their home sell in winter as in summer.

Inventory is already down

This effect is multiplied when inventory is already unnaturally low, as it is this year. ?The Seattle market?s inventory of homes for sale is down 45% since last year. ?Available homes for sale this winter will be even more scarce than in recent years, and those listings will likely sell at a very high rate.

Home sellers today who adapt to our changing population, the new real estate landscape, and the modern buyer?s online searching habits put themselves at a significant advantage over their selling competition?even in the winter.
