National ? Chinese ship spends an hour in disputed waters

TOKYO ?

Japan said a Chinese government ship briefly entered its territorial waters off disputed islands on Saturday, as the Japanese premier vowed he would not tolerate Beijing?s incursions into the area.

The fisheries patrol boat entered the waters in the East China Sea at 4:48 p.m. and was sailing some 19 kilometers northwest of Uotsuri, one of the Senkaku islands, Japan?s coast guard said in a statement.

But the Chinese ship moved out of the zone after about an hour, watched by a Japanese coast guard vessel, it said.

Beijing claims the Japanese-controlled islands, which it calls the Diaoyus.

The incident was the latest in a series, with Japan claiming in one case that Chinese vessels had locked weapons-targeting radar onto a ship and a helicopter. Beijing denied the charge.

Saturday?s incident came as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, now on his first visit to the United States since he took office late December, vowed that he would not tolerate any challenge to control over the contested islands.

?We simply cannot tolerate any challenge now and in the future. No nation should make any miscalculation or underestimate the firmness of our resolve,? Abe said Friday in Washington.

Google reportedly in negotiations with music labels to launch streaming service

Google reportedly in negotiations with music labels to launch streaming service

Surprise, surprise: Apple isn't the only company that's rumored to be developing a music streaming service. According to Financial Times, Google is working to augment its current download store with a streaming service that could take on the likes of Spotify, Slacker and Nokia Music. The outlet's sources suggest that Google is currently in the negotiation stage with record labels, and that its service would likely feature both paid and free, ad-supported components. Naturally, while this news remains in the realm of rumors for both Apple and Google, it seems that the race is now on for which company is both willing and able to supplement its music store with a streaming service. Anyone care to place bets on which company is first to the starting line?

AMD Turbo Dock tech boosts performance of docked Windows convertible laptops

amd-turbo-dock-convertible-laptop-tablet-windows

While the jury's still out as to whether users will embrace the new convertible laptops that have launched with the debut of Windows 8, AMD is betting that its new Turbo Dock technology can help improve the computing experience whether you're using one in tablet mode or as a traditional notebook.

The chip company says its new feature, to be showcased in devices unveiled at next week's Mobile World Congress 2013, addresses the fact that the hybrid device performs similarly whether it's in laptop or tablet mode, even if you are doing wildly different tasks. To remedy this situation, Turbo Dock will speed up the accelerated processing unit (APU) of the unit when its docked in its keyboard, while drawing less power when it's being used as a tablet.

The innovation will be baked into AMD's new "Temash" chip for tablets and hybrid devices, which will also be on display at MWC 2013. It will counter Intel's current Ivy Bridge processors being used in Windows 8 mobile PCs, as well as the forthcoming Haswell chips. Like Intel, AMD is playing catch-up in the tablet processor space, but hopes its long-time association with traditional Windows desktops and laptops will help it break into the market via the new form factors based around Windows 8.

The Turbo Dock feature is a nice selling point -- especially if it works well in real-world testing -- that marries internal performance to external usage, but will anyone be buying? That's not a question unique to AMD and its new Temash platform. To spur the adoption of touchscreen Windows 8 systems, including the convertible laptops Turbo Dock is designed to work with, Microsoft and Best Buy are planning a $100 discount program starting this Sunday.?

We'll see what types of devices Turbo Dock will launch with as MWC 2013 kicks into gear next week, so stay tuned.

Parents Stand Up Against Yoga Bullies in School

"The kids who are opting out are getting teased and bullied ... We have one little girl whose classmates told her her parents are stupid because she opted out. That?s not supposed to happen in our schools," argues attorney Dean Broyles?while explaining why yoga should be kept out of public schools.?Broyles is representing the parents of two children who have slapped the?Encinitas Unified School District (just outside of San Diego) with a lawsuit because the district began incorporating yoga classes in September?the parents argue yoga is an Eastern religion, and therefore mixes church and state.?

The collective groans you may be hearing are from the several yoga practitioners at Equinox who aren't om-ing because they are too busy worrying about how flat their abs are getting. ?Some of those people are like the human hate crush known as Adam Levine, who freely admits doing yoga for the vanity aspects. "Yoga takes what you have and molds and sculpts it, which is a much more natural way to look and feel ...?I don't like how people bullshit about how yoga is not about vanity," Levine told Details magazine in December of 2011.?And look no further than the absence of religion Equinox's own yoga advertisements:

Obviously they're not teaching those kids that kind of sexy times yoga. But the basic imagery here, is, this is an?exercise?that will make you strong and hot. The baseline takeaway the school wants to make is that this (again, in the less sexy way more basic form) is a good workout for kids.?

"As a First Amendment lawyer, I wouldn?t go after an exercise program. I don?t go after people for stretching,"?said Broyles to Reuters.?Broyles is either being very dismissive or has never been to an actual yoga class, or a combination of the two. "But Ashtanga yoga is a religious-based yoga, and if we are separating church and state, we can?t pick and choose religious favorites.

The children are allowed to opt out of the program which, according to The Telegraph, has even changed the names of the poses, some of which are already English versions of their sanskrit names like?Utkatasana, into even more simple ones like "airplane" and "pancake" as to avoid controversy. The program does not, apparently, feature any chanting, prayer positions, or cultural references either.?

"There is really no dispute as to the physical and mental health benefits of the yoga program?teachers and parents throughout the district have raved about noticeable improvement in the students? focus," a parent of one of the cool kids who are allowed to do yoga told Reuters. "We reject the argument that yoga poses constitute the practice of Hinduism as both a matter of law and common sense. There is absolutely nothing religious or spiritual about the classroom instruction."

Chevrolet SS Sedan Not Heading to Canada

The all-new Chevrolet SS sedan will not be heading to Canada, General Motors has confirmed.

Going on sale later this year in America, Canadians won?t be able to enjoy the new 415 hp, 415 lb-ft of torque SS that?s powered by the American automaker?s 6.2-liter V8 engine.

The announcement comes as a surprise to those north of the border as the car?s predecessor, the Pontiac G8, was offered in the true north strong and free.

The SS sedan won?t be the only model that has a discrepancy between the American and Canadian markets. In Canada, Chevrolet offers the Trax and Orlando, both of which aren?t available in America. But in this case, Canada is definitely getting the short end of the stick. Americans surely aren?t sulking over not being able to buy a Trax or Orlando.

Juliana Stock: Tips When Facing Fear and Stress

For years I've lived by the personal mantra, particularly in times of fear and stress -- crippling or otherwise -- feelings aren't facts. For me, it's a simple, clarifying yet true phrase that has seen me through a number of sticky, stressful, even painful moments. Fear can be one of the most crippling of all the emotions. It can paralyze and hinder progress or, when channeled, it can transform into courage.

Fear and stress also have bad raps. Sometimes it's a necessary evil to get to what we really want or need. In my adult life, I've made some difficult decisions that created stressful situations as byproducts. For example, I chose to end a marriage and become a single mother, I chose to eventually get remarried and introduce a stepfather to my two beautiful children, and I chose to make a career change to pursue something I was more passionate about. All of these things came with their share of sadness, stress, fear and tears, but what was on the the other side was joy, laughter, anticipation and excitement.

Between the "before" and "after" in all those situations, I did not lose my fear -- at least not initially. What I've come to understand is that courage isn't the absence of fear at all. It's taking an action or risk, making a move or decision in spite of it, and here are some of the tools that I found were handy:

1. Know this too shall pass: No situation or feeling is forever, not even fear, you just have to have the patience and persistence to wait it out.

2. Perspective is everything: Even before your circumstances change, your perspective might and that is a beautiful thing.

3. Just take the next right action: When it feels like there are a million things to accomplish and it's insurmountable, it's easy to become paralyzed, and that's often when an "all or nothing" mindset can sneak in and take over (example: well, doing that one thing won't fix the whole problem, so why do anything at all?). The fact is, a journey of 100 miles began with the first step, so when I feel overwhelmed and I start focusing on doing the best thing I can do that's right in front of me, I can stay on task, and pretty soon the little tasks start to add up.

4. Identify quantifiable evidence: Feelings may not be facts, but sometimes in moments of high stress or true despair they can be worse. What I try to do -- in moments that are less fraught -- is collect pieces of quantifiable evidence that combat the fear so I can have them in my back pocket. For example, if I fear I will be alone, I have letters and notes from my husband and children that say how much they love me; if the fear is about not being talented in a chosen field, perhaps keep a scrapbook of professional accomplishments.

5. Resist the urge to isolate: When I'm feeling bad, I always want to hibernate. It makes sense... facing the world is the last thing I want to do when I feel like the word "LOSER" is written across my face. The truth is, isolation feeds desperation and only digs the hole deeper. Support systems are really important when getting through moments of stress as is continuing to feel like a citizen of the world.
