A year-end financial deficit has forced the Humane Society for Southwest Washington to cut overhead and reduce services to the public.?
Clark County?s only open-admission animal shelter recently announced that, beginning Jan. 21, it will no longer be open on Mondays.
The HSSW was previously open seven days a week.
That means Vancouver-area residents will no longer be able to bring in or adopt animals on Mondays. The shelter will continue to take in animals brought in by animal control officers on that day.
The shelter has also adjusted its public hours on the remaining six days. Hours for animal intake and pet adoptions will be noon-6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, also beginning on Jan. 21.
Shelter staff and volunteers will continue to provide feed, medical care and exercise for shelter animals seven days a week, said??interim executive director Stacey Waddell.?
The shelter is an independent nonprofit that relies on public donations to fund 50 percent of its operating costs. The shelter received less funding from its two ReTails Thrift Stores last year, according to a news release.
?We hope that these are temporary reductions and that 2013?s income picture will be much brighter,? Waddell says. ?We are committed to continued care of the homeless and stray animals of Clark County, as well as assisting families by providing the resources they need to care for and keep their pets during challenging economic times.?
The shelter is located at 1100 N.E. 192nd Ave. in ?Vancouver. For more information, call?360-693-4746 or visit?southwesthumane.org.
