(VEN) ? Vietnam?s major information technology and telecommunications enterprises saw stable development, the country?s main export markets were maintained and revenues from hardware, software, services and digital content achieved relatively high growth rate in 2012.
A conference focusing on implementing tasks for the sector in 2013 was organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications at the end of December. A conference also summarized the activities of Vietnam?s IT and telecommunications sector in 2012. According to the conference?s report, the sector had fulfilled its goals despite difficulties due to the economic crisis and 2013 would be the pivotal year in the five-year 2011-2015 plan.
Vietnam?s IT industry continued to grow. In terms of computers, electronic products and components, total export turnover in the first 11 months of 2012 reached US$6.98 billion, an increase of 69 percent compared to the same period in 2011. China remained Vietnam?s leading import market with total value in the first 11 months of 2012 of US$1.68 billion, an increase of 81.5 percent compared to the same period in 2011, followed by the EU, the US and Malaysia.
In terms of mobile devices and components, total export value in the first 11 months of 2012 stood at US$11.34 billion, a two-fold increase compared to the same period last year. Vietnam?s main import partner in its period was the EU, with total value of US$5.08 billion, a 1.9-fold increase compared to the same period last year, accounting for 44.8 percent of total export value, followed by the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Chinese-Taipei with total value of US$1.31 billion, US$690 million and US$460 million respectively. Total revenues from software, services and digital content retained a relatively high growth rate.
Telecommunications and the internet market continued to grow in 2012 despite facing difficulties in the global and domestic economy. Total telephone users throughout the country reached 148.5 million, of which, mobile phone users accounted for 93.3 percent of the total. In addition, the country recorded 31.2 million internet users. According to the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VINIC), Vietnam ranked eighteenth in the world, eighth in the Asian region and third in the Southeast Asia in terms of internet users. The total number of broadband internet users reached 4.3 million.
The Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Viettel representatives said that revenues of Vietnam?s largest telecommunication groups achieved relatively high growth. In 2012, VNPT?s total revenues reached VND130.39 trillion while Viettel?s total sales were estimated at VND140.058 trillion. Viettel?s pre-tax profits were estimated to stand at VND24.479 trillion. Total investment capital reached VND10.271 trillion, an increase of 1.497 trillion compared to the same period last year. These results put Viettel as the country?s highest IT and telecommunications earner.
The Ministry of Information and Communications said that in terms of IT, the ministry in 2013 would continue to improve the legal environment and adopt the Information Security Law; focus on removing obstacles in terms of investment capital for key projects in the national program, completing the IT development program according to Prime Ministerial Decision 50/2009/QD-TTg and adopting new programs serving the development of the sector to 2020. In particular, the ministry intends to promote the implementation and development of open source software associated with the development of enterprises, markets and IT products and services.
In terms of telecommunications, the ministry will continue to accelerate the drafting of policies and legal documents in order to effectively implement the Telecommunications Law; adopt plans and provide information content on broadband telecommunications infrastructure; closely manage prepaid mobile phone subscribers and limit spam messages and promotional activities in order to ensure market development and healthy competition./.
