The McAllen Chamber of Commerce?s Arts Council is accepting applications for the first City Poet Laureate.
?This is a new program for McAllen,? said Jaime Pena, Chair of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce?s McAllen Arts Council. ?The Arts Council is very pleased to initiate this program, which will aid in drawing attention to the literary arts.?
While public art such as sculptures and murals are beginning to become more visible around town, the McAllen Arts Council recognized that there were limited options for presenting literary arts to the community, explained Nancy Millar, Vice President and Director of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce?s Convention and Visitors? Bureau. ?Having an official City Poet Laureate will offer many opportunities to incorporate poetry into official functions,? she said.
The first Poet Laureate will be announced on World Poetry Day, March 23, and will hold the title through 2014.
Poets who live in McAllen may apply themselves, or be nominated by another individual. Applications are available online at www.mcallencvb.com, at www.mcallenart.com and at the McAllen Chamber and McAllen Creative Incubator offices located at 1200 Ash Avenue and 1001 South 16th Avenue respectively. Deadline for applications to be returned to the McAllen Chamber of Commerce is February 4, 2013 at 5:00 pm.
